Abstract
The growth of pine and spruce plantings, established in 1967 on poor peat soils (Teni-Fibric Histosols) and fertilized by N100P120K100, P120K100, N100P120, P120 fertilizers (the numbers pointed the quantity of active material, kg/ha) in 1971 were investigated during period 1967-2009. It was determined that height increment of young pines in poor peat soils (Teni-Fibric Histosols) increased during the first ten years after fertilization with phosphorous fertilizers (norm of fertilizers -120 kg/ha of active material) by 20.0 %, whereas that of young spruces - by 42.6 %. Enrichment of phosphorous fertilizers by nitrogen and potassium fertilizers increased the growth of young trees insignificantly, had no effect at all. It shows that in poor peat soils (Terri-Fibric Histosols) the growth of pines and spruces is mostly limited by the shortage of phosphorous. The parameters of needles also showed a better growth of young pines fertilized with mineral fertilizers, as compared to unfertilized ones. The needles were significantly longer and heavier in fertilized plantings in comparison with unfertilized ones. Despite the fact that fertilization of poor peat soils (Teni-Fibric Histosob) with mineral fertilizers reduces the resistance of pine trees to needle cast and a declined activity of fertilizers after 17-18 years causes an extended for 10-13 years decrease in diameter increment of young trees, average diameter increment of trees during the period of 37 years after fertilization comprises 12.7-14.8 mm. It was determined that ash content in the upper layers (2-30 cm) of peat soils fertilized t?y mineral fertilizers increases (has a tendency to increase) due to a more intensive decomposition and pressure of peat rather than in unfertilized ones (ash content over the 37-year period in drained and fertilized peat soils increased by 9.4 % and in unfertilized peat soils by 3.5 %).
