Abstract

Teenagers who live in community-based foster homes and have a tendency to exhibit delinquent behaviour constitute quite a large percentage of children living in foster homes. These teenagers must be treated professionally. Yet in order to help a teenager who has a tendency to exhibit delinquent behaviour, we need to find out the reasons for this behaviour.
The main question of the research: what are the reasons that determine the tendency for delinquent behaviour in teenagers living in community-based foster homes? Research objective – the reasons for delinquent behaviour of teenagers living in community-based foster homes.
The goal of the research is to determine the reasons for delinquent behaviour of teenagers living in community-based foster homes. The theoretical part analyses characteristics of the adolescent stage and the reasons for exhibiting delinquent behaviour. The research used a quality-based approach, the data gathering method was a half-structured interview, the method used for analysing data was inductive, qualitative content analysis. Six social workers were interviewed during the research, who are working in community-based foster homes in Kaunas municipality and who have to deal with the signs of delinquent behaviour in teenagers. The research revealed that delinquent behaviour is determined by inner and outer factors. A tendency to exhibit delinquent behaviour comes from failure to fulfill basic needs in childhood. Teenagers, who had their basic needs unfulfilled, are discontent, they have no ability to control their emotions and to coordinate in life their desires, needs and priorities. Teenager activity outside foster homes has quite a big influence too, e.g., friends, who often pull in the teenagers into criminal activity. Delinquent behaviour is further reinforced by the feeling in teenagers that they can get away with crime, and the laws are also favourable to them, because teenagers compensate for the harm that they have done only from 16 years old.
