Abstract
The article throws light onto hitherto little known facts of the life of the kojalavičius family. the brothers albertas, kazimieras ir Petras kojalavičuses were born in kaunas in the family of the kaunas merchant Jonas kojalavičius. their maternal grandfather was the kaunas city administrator albertas Beinartas. Bearing in mind that all three brothers left the city dweller class and chose Church in a young age, it is important to know what impressions they could have taken with them from their native kaunas, what they could have seen there, in other words, what kaunas of the beginning of the 17 th century was like. at those time kaunas already was the second largest city in Lithuania and an important centre of commerce. the life in this most burgerish Lithuanian city was dictated by a rhythm of merchants’ activities. its another feature was an intensive church life; in the 17 th century kaunas had a parish church, two Catholic monasteries and three more churches. in addition, two women’s monasteries were founded during the first three decades of the 17 th century. kaunas Lutheran community, in its own turn, tried to compete with the Catholics. Having left kaunas at a very young age, the brother kojalavičiuses, apparently, had not adopted the city dweller mentality, since the latter is perceptible neither in their activities nor in their creative work. moreover, they adopted the aristocratic surname Vijūkas, which also revealing as to their class, social and religious values and attitudes.
