Abstract
Multidrug resistance membrane pumps is the major factor causing failure in cancer treatment when various chemotherapeutic agents are used. In this study Jurkat and MX1 type cells were used to determine the effects of tetraphenylphosphonium cations and ionophoric antibiotics nigericin and monensin on multidrug resistance pumps. DNA intercalating agent ethidium bromide was used as indicator to assess the efficiency of multidrug pumps. The results of this study suggest that lipophilic tetraphenylphosphonium cations upregulates the expression of multidrug resistance pumps, whereas the expression is downregulated by nigericin and monensin.
