English Philology
Description
Professional knowledge of English is not limited
to the work of a translator. Individuals who graduate from English Philology go
on to become language teachers in exotic countries, specialists in
computational linguistics, journalists, politicians, actors, and even singers.
Being fluent in the most widely spoken international language opens up global
opportunities in various fields. Can you picture yourself in any of these
roles? Then choose our English Philology study programme. Here, you will learn
about the linguistic and discursive subtleties of the English language and
acquire fundamental philological knowledge and the necessary competences in the
fields of translation studies, literary theory, and English language teaching
methodology. You will study phonetics, linguistics, morphology, and syntax, and
learn the main translation strategies. You will also analyse British, American,
and Canadian literature and its development, explore the importance of the
literary text, examine various methodologies for teaching and learning foreign
languages, and explore the possibilities of information technology in this
process. You will also have the opportunity to select elective courses that
personally interest you, such as ethnic minority, women's and children's literature
in English, or gain a deeper insight into American and British civilisation,
the field of semantic studies, the characteristics of language in different
media, and many other interesting subjects. Study English Philology and broaden
your world!

My first semester at VMU was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life so far, and it was even more enjoyable thanks to the support from the friends I’ve made here. I’m also thankful for the guidance my professors gave me, they made navigating and adapting to a university in a different continent not as intimidating as it seems. I can picture the rest of my semesters being just as good, if not better.

I am a Ukrainian international student and since enrolling into the programme of English Philology, I have explored the English language from multiple unexpected angles. I have never realized just how strongly language impacts the way societies are built and how they function. Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics courses reveal it best and are very engaging. Linguistic classes such as Phonetics and Morphology that come before introduce the technical language necessary for further academic development. Literary courses are just superb, providing a lot of historical context that put all the texts into perspective. The teachers are very communicative and with a good sense of humour.
