Biotechnology
Description
The greatest inventions often emerge from working with the
tiniest particles. And if you are eager to see your ideas put into practice in
the near future, the Biotechnology study programme is the perfect fit for you.
Here, you will learn how to use laboratory equipment and how to investigate,
analyse, evaluate, and interpret a wide range of data using modern methods.
Your newly acquired IT skills will assist you in developing new products, which
are a crucial driving force for Europe's economic growth - after all, biotechnology
finds applications in various fields, ranging from pharmaceutics and
environmental protection to crop production and food industry. In addition to
the economic aspect, here you will learn to evaluate biotechnology from ethical
and social perspectives. This study programme will provide you with a solid
foundation in specialised biology, chemistry, and physics, and will introduce
you to genetics, immunology, molecular modelling, and the futuristic world of
genetic engineering. After graduation, you have the opportunity to work in the
biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and food industries, or pursue a further
career as a researcher in academic institutions. Transform the world's DNA with
Biotechnology studies!
Why Biotechnology programme?
- Biotechnology combines the disciplines of biology and
chemistry and utilizes mathematics and physics to provide the tools for modern
biology and biomedical research.
- Biotechnology utilizes living cells and cellular materials
to create?pharmaceutical, diagnostic, agricultural, environmental, and other
products to benefit society. It is also used to study and to alter genetic
information in animals so that human diseases can be modeled and studied.
- Biotechnology is both a basic and an applied science. These
technologies are applied in agriculture, health care, forensics, industrial
processing, and environmental management in many useful ways.
- Modern technologies are evolving rapidly, so new information
has to be absorbed while working. The ability to quickly understand it and
learn is highly valued by employers. And that ability depends on a solid
foundation in the natural and technical sciences provided by biotechnology
studies.

Biotechnology is the future – it demands intellectual rigour and professional training, but it also presents vast opportunities for the development of expensive and important products.
Prof. Algimantas Paulauskas, Professor at the Department of Biology, Programme Teacher
The field of biotechnology is not only incredibly interesting but also essential in gaining a deeper understanding of certain diseases and finding effective ways to combat them.
Augustina Mišeikaitė, graduate, Product Manager at UAB Nova Natura
During her studies, Vita displayed curiosity and consistency, paying special attention to grasping the essence of the subjects and enjoying laboratory work. Upon graduation, she successfully aligned her future with a position as a biotechnologist in one of the world's leading companies.
Vita Tumosaitė, graduate, Senior Biotechnologist at Thermo Fisher Scientific
Partners
To acquire practical skills, students have the opportunity to choose internships in a wide range of companies and institutions, in cooperation with former students and social partners. Representatives of social partners are included in the study programme Committee and are invited to participate in programme reviews and updates, and representatives of individual companies are invited to give lectures in this study programme.
