Antanas Kulakauskas

Assoc. Prof. Antanas Kulakauskas, a distinguished Lithuanian historian, political scientist, publicist, and Doctor of Humanities, was awarded the regalia of VMU Honorary Doctor in 2009.

Antanas Kulakauskas was born on 30 April 1952 in Laumakė village, Ignalina district. From 1970 to 1975, he studied at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University, and from 1978 to 1981, he undertook postgraduate studies at Leningrad University. In 1993, he defended his doctoral thesis in history.

From 1997 to 2000, he worked as the Head of VMU Department of History, and from 2000 to 2005, he held the position of the Director of the VMU Institute of Political Science and Diplomacy (now a Faculty), where he also taught. In 2005, he began teaching at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), where he also served as Head of the Department of Political Sciences of the Faculty of Strategic Management and Policy. In 2006, he became the Chairman of the Lithuanian Scientific Society, and in 2007, Chairman of the Council of Higher Education. His research interests include nationalism and national issues. His major publications include: Kova už valstiečių sielas. Caro valdžia, Lietuvos visuomenė ir pradinis švietimas XIX a. viduryje (The Fight for the Souls of the Peasants. The Tsar’s Rule, Lithuanian Society and Primary Education in the Mid-19th Century), “Lithuanian National Movement and Its Future Vision of Lithuania” (The Borders and National Space in East – Central Europe, 2000), and “Nuo amžių slenksčio. Naujausia Lietuvos XIX amžiaus istoriografija” (From the Threshold of Centuries: The Latest Historiography on 19th Century Lithuania, with co-authored, Darbai ir dienos, 2001).
