The object of the paper is dictation writing abilities as the learning to learn competence of 2nd grade students. The aim of the research is to investigate dictation writing and self-assessment of a dictation of 2nd grade students. The objectives of the research are the following: 1. To examine dictation writing abilities of 2nd grade students. 2. To compare dictation writing abilities of boys and girls. 3. To examine the ability of 2nd grade students to evaluate their own dictations. The research shows that boys experience more difficulties with dictation tasks and their writing achievements are lower than those of girls. Moreover, the ability to evalute their own dictations adequately is very low among most students. Many of the research participants devalued their own results of dictation taks. Thus, it is essential to use not symbolic self-evalutation tools (e. g. mood face), but open questions which would enable students to evaluate their own work adequately, to know their own writing and overall learning abilities better. A greater variety of dictation methods and self-evaluation tasks would also enable children to develop skills which are essential for lifelong learning and successful functioning in contemporary society.
The relevance of the topic. With the advent of new information technologies, new curricula and greater specialization in the workplace, written communication has become a vector for integration and success within society. Effective writing skills are considered to be indispensable to participate and communicate in contemporary society. Therefore, education is found accountable for preparing children to be socially active by giving them high quality writing instruction and by doing so, supporting them to develop essential writing skills. The results of the National and International PIRLS research conducted in 2011, showed that students in primary schools of Lithuania have various writing difficulties. Their elementary literacy abilities are getting lower, the achievements of boys are lower than that of girls. At schools there are not enough learning strategies which would enable students to achieve high writing results, to learn better. It is essential and urgent to teach children to read and write competently, enabling them to achieve today’s high standards of literacy and prepare them for succesful functioning in contemporary society. Many scientists consider the dictation method to be a useful teaching and learning exercise by which pupils learn to improve their language learning. Moreover, scientists and teachers see the dictation as a tool for the development of the learning to learn competence (self-check of the dictation, self-evalution of writing difficulties, learning to listen attentively and find essential information, etc.).
