Abstract
In their opinion, the contribution of arts teachers to the enhancement of pupils'health is small or almost absent. In conclusion it can be said that arts students' attitudes towards physical education exhibit a slight positive change in the course of ther studies as they gain health-related knowledge and skills, however they do not integrate these into the subject(s) they teach during their pedagogical practice sufficiently.
The article deals with the attitudes of arts students, future teachers, towards physical education and the self-assessment of their competences in application of physical education measures in the process of education. These elements provide prerequisites for assessment of their, as future teachers, competence in health education that is very important in shaping the attitudes of pupils regarding a healthy lifestyle by integrating elements of health education into the art subject taught. The aims of the research is to reveal the attitudes towards and competences in physical education of female arts students at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences as a prerequisite for teacher competence in health education. A questionnaire survey was completed by 84 students at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences: 55 first-year students were surveyed in 2010, and 29 of these students were surveyed again in 2013, when they were fourth-year students. The research revealed that throughout the period of studying at a higher education institution, minor changes in the attitudes of art students towards physical education occurred. Fourth-year students judged their methodological competences in physical education to be be: ter compared to the judgements made in the first year. The research revealed that merely one quarter of the teachers integrated their physical education knowledge and competences, which had been gained while studying, in practical activities during their pedagogical practice at school. Discussion of the aspects of healthy nutrition and physical activeness with pupils during lessons was practiced by students most often.
