Abstract

Soil and ground water in former pesticide warehouse areas have contained high concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexane, hexachlorobenzene, pentachlorobenzene DDT, dieldrin and other pesticides. Because of the excessive contamination of these pesticides, they can have a negative impact on soil organisms, most of which are different types of earthworms. Earthworms are characterized by improved soil properties, but they can also accumulate high pesticide concentrations. Soil pesticides can therefore have a negative impact on the growth and reproduction of earthworms.
The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of former pesticide warehouse areas on soil quality and to determine the impact on the growth and development of compost worm (Eisenia fetida L.). Chemical analysis of soil samples has shown that pesticide storage areas have a neutral pH. A tendency of soil acidification has been observed with increasing contamination of the area by pesticides (p <0.05). The amount of organic matter in the areas of pesticide warehouses was insignificantly lower than the control samples (p> 0.05). Ammonium concentrations (p <0.05) were significantly higher in the areas of pesticide warehouses except for the Dubriškis Warehouse (p> 0.05). Nitrate and nitrite concentrations in pesticide storage areas were significantly higher than controls (p <0.05). Nitrates exceeded MRLs only in the territory of the Bubiai Pesticide Warehouse, and nitrite concentrations exceeded MRLs in all areas of pesticide warehouses (p <0.05). Phosphate MRLs have been exceeded in all areas of pesticide warehouses.
In the least polluted area of the Dubriškis pesticide warehouse, the mass of earthworms increased significantly by 12.13% (p <0.05), while the amount of earthworms in soil samples increased by 7.5% (p <0.05). Compound earthworms increased by 10.28% (p <0.05) in the area of the wartime pesticide warehouse, and the amount of earthworms in the soil increased by 5% (p> 0.05). The mass of earthworms decreased by 7.99% (p <0.05) in the territory of Bubiai pesticide warehouse, the amount of earthworms decreased even more, that is about 37.5% (p <0.05). From the data obtained, it is observed that the more the area of the former pesticide warehouses is contaminated with pesticides, the more it has a negative impact on the growth and reproduction of compost worms (Eisenia fetida L.).
