Abstract: As phytoattenuation is a new interdisciplinary subject between traditional phytoremediation and biomass production it needs more detailed studies that include influence of heavy metals on energy recovery process, selection of the most fit plant species and applicable conversion technology. This short article defines the soil status in Lithuania regarding heavy metal contamination and most frequent remediation techniques for contaminated land management. It also briefly explains the initial stage of phytoattenuation experiment: selection of contaminated soil from former septic drain fields and the choice of bioenergy plant species: rape and Jerusalem artichoke
