The purpose of our research was to examine the suitability of widely cultivated black currant species which are listed in the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture. The examination was performed during the period between 2012 and 2014, in the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture. On purpose to assess suitability of the species for ecological horticulture were tested the following species: ‘Titania’, ‘Geo’, ‘Smaliai’, ‘Minaj Šmyriov’, ‘Blizgiai’, ‘Vakariai’, ‘Katiuša’, ‘Gagatai’, ‘Almiai’ and ‘Aldoniai’ (Vakariai x 70-88-9-1). Were carried out qualitative researches of black currant berries and bunches, was determined their resistance to fungal diseases and pests, also their productivity. When summarizing the resistance of black currant species against fungal diseases and pests it can be said that the species which are the mostly resistant in regard of anthracnose, mildew, leaf spot and gall mites are ‘Vakariai’ and ‘Aldoniai’. Very big focus in the ecological currant fields is given on the length of fruit bunches, because the berries are harvested manually. According to the studies carried out it can be concluded that the most suitable species is ‘Titania’ because it has grown up the longest fruit bunches – 4,83cm. Qualitative indicators of bunches and harvest of the black currant species ‘Almiai’ were moderate, however this species has grown up the biggest harvest (0,910 kg on the bush), this can be explained by the fact that this species is characterized by its long harvesting branches.
