Abstract: The declaration of the independence of Lithuania in 1991 was an impulse for large-scale reforms in all sectors of country live. The reforms in land reclamation sector with drainage systems of 3 million hectares and large number of different structures were necessary as well. The main problems to be solved were the preparation and implementation of new principles of management, repair and rehabilitation of the existing drainage systems and construction of the new ones. The critical evaluation of existing drainage systems from economical, environmental and technical points of view was carried out
