Abstract

Motor oil – it is an integral part of the engine, which depends on the total workload of the aggregate, the purpose of which is to lubricate the internal parts of the engine, remove combustion products, reduce friction inside the engine, protect the components against corrosion, keeping their working capacity longer. Engine performance can be extended with proper maintenance, this is regularly changing oils and their filters. Engine oil processes are very complex and depend on crankshaft rotation speed, engine parts of the engine, engine operating temperature and fuel combustion products. One of the main features of engine oil is viscosity. The ability of the oil to maintain a proper lubricating film between the metal rotating parts at variable temperatures and pressures determines the durability of the motors, the loss of friction, and the ease of start – up.
The structure of the engines is quite complicated, with a large number of precision parts and assemblies, therefore their maintenance is inappropriate can make up a significant part of the unplanned costs for their repair. The aim of the study is to investigate the degree of variation of tribological properties of motor oils in cereal harvesters, when the engine oil is not used for more than half a year. Determination of tribological properties of motor oils has been performed with the aid of a four–ball extreme pressure test, which evaluates the performance of oil lubricating properties at significantly higher loads. The study found that the tribological (abrasion inhibition) properties of engine oil in the engine crankcase change significantly during the winter. The results of the tests showed that the average diameter of the bead in the spring was about 0.7 mm, while the average diameter of the bead in the autumn was 0.5 mm, which is an average drop of 40%. This assumes that the oil–forming boundary layer is weaker, which increases the risk of cracking and friction between the friction pairs.
