Abstract

The research shows that there is a tendency among teenagers to use drugs and this issue still remains a problem in our society. Professionals recommend parents to talk about this problem with their kids even since the pre-school age, although there is a question whether parents pay enough attention to it and objectively understand the importance of their preventive role as well as interpret the recommendations of educators, psychologists, and public health professionals correctly because the results of the research conducted over the years do not show the improvement of this situation. The aim of this Master thesis is to determine how the role of parents in improving the prevention of drug use among adolescents is performed. It is important to reveal the shortcomings of the preventive role in this context and to seek more effective parent education in the prevention of drug use because this problem emerges constantly.
The data for the empirical part of this study is collected by interviewing 67 pupils of 9 and 10 grades and their parents in two education institutions implementing the Part II of the Basic Education Program. The role of parents has been assessed based on the opinions of teenagers and their parents about preventive work done in their families.
The results show that 19% of adolescents and 10% of their parents have used drugs rarely or occasionally. Other psychoactive substances are used seldom; this is reported by 40% of parents. Parents evaluate themselves better than their children evaluate them in terms of importance in drug abuse prevention (p = 0.0006). This research identifies the lack of necessary information among the parents for successfully preventing adolescent drug abuse.
