Abstract
Živilė Bardzilauskaitė-Bergins discovered bone china as an art student and never traded it for a different material. For her work, she uses beautiful English porcelain clay of sublime white colour and superb quality. The artist produces original author’s dishes, decorative plates, slabs and sculpture compositions, some of these she creates in different handbuilding ways, for others, prepares moulds. Her products combine practical and decorative function. The decoration of her bone china combines painting, printing and sculpture, sometimes one of these tendencies comes to dominate. Quite a few pieces are decorated in on glaze painting, yet even more frequently, she uses the method developed by her own. An image or design is indented on the biscuit and filled in with painted porcelain slip, after repeated firing the work is glazed and decorated on glaze. Skilled in drawing, the female artist combines refined linework with local patches of colour and painterly mirages of Secession type ornaments. The images emerging on her pieces are metaphoric and poetic. In her earlier stages, the artist used to explore shapes of huge, impressive and powerful creatures, reminiscent in their appearance of fairy-tale characters. Her later work relies more on human imagery: the female shape dominates the sculptural form and the theme of decorative drawings. The graceful and powerful female figure has branded her work during the past decade. Her more recent relief slabs show a more generalized and fragmented treatment of human figure, evocative of different Modernism trends. The relief and painterly decoration methods reveal material qualities of porcelain clay. Different textures, indentations, glossy and matte glazes, the lightness of brushwork and colour variations of on glaze painting make her ceramic pieces a rich aesthetic experience.
