Marks of a book are like the works of art and like the signposts of ownership. This point of view to the book mark has become popular in Lithuania. The problem is that there is a lack of analysis of a mark origin, motivation and context meaning. In this article I attempted to look at a book mark from the point of view of people’s cultural and historical source, inseparable from the beginnings of the written form of script itself. The founding of the script enabled people to visualize and materialize thought processes, wishes via signs. The alphabet was seen as having enigmatic, ezoteric power able to perform the protective function. The script enables the communication among individuals separated by the space and time. The script has the ability to preserve the inscription and notify about the owner’s rights to it. The script is also valuable while communicating with invisible and alien forces.[...].
