Abstract
This article examines the activity of Kaunas State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts during the Stalinist period. The overall characteristic of social and political order of this period is also discussed. Post-colonial theory is used in this study, whose principles allow the defining of the radical atmosphere of the Stalinist period and the place of an artist and their way of functioning in this atmosphere. Kaunas State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts had to manoeuvre within a politicised space whose radicalism was determined by the hegemon Josef Stalin and his puppet Communist party, in which the perception of truth and the loss of the boundaries between subjectivity and objectivity of that truth universalised it and the values of the party, thus creating conditions for the relationship of power to develop and to transform the cultural mechanism of hegemony into a politicised apparatus of repression. In such an environment which was (or was forced to be) homogenous, Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts functioned as a dual institution, which publicly (due to the repressive nature of the period) accepted the new rule of social realism but individually, through private lectures and the influences of the professors showed a certain continuation and the significance of the tradition of the pre-war period. Šio straipsnio tikslas – pokolonijinės teorijos kontekste charakterizuoti meno ir politikos sąveiką stalininiu laikotarpiu vienoje akademinėje menininkų rengimo institucijoje – Kauno valstybinio taikomosios ir dekoratyvinės dailės institute. Pokolonijinės teorijos principai leidžia nusakyti stalininio laikotarpio pobūdį, veikimo mechanizmus ir minėto instituto veiklą bei vietą tuose mechanizmuose. Nepaisant tuo laikotarpiu Sovietų Sąjungoje egzistavusio siekio radikaliai homogenizuoti kultūrinę aplinką, meninę raišką, privačioje instituto erdvėje, dėstytojų ir studentų veikloje, kūriniuose galima aptikti ryškių nepritarimo niveliacijai apraiškų, ikikarinės tapybos tradicijos požymių, individualiuose dailininkų kūriniuose tampančių atsvara socialistinio realizmo taisyklėms ne tik stalininiu, bet ir vėlesniais sovietiniais laikotarpiais. Straipsnis parengtas 2013 m. Vytauto Didžiojo universitete apginto bakalaurinio baigiamojo darbo Lietuvos dailės gyvenimas sovietinės ideologijos sistemoje (vadovė prof. dr. Rasa Žukienė) pagrindu.
