Abstract: The content of the major elements – nitrogen, sulphur and carbon – in Physcia tenella and Parmelia sulcata thalli exposed to the influence of traffic pollution was investigated. The distance from the Kaunas–Vilnius highway (Lithuania) was regarded as the main parameter to check this effect. Results of the present study indicated that NO2 levels were not correlated with the distance from the road. The relatively low NO2 values may be due to the effects of rains. A significant relation between NO2 levels and N accumulation was found in lichen thalli. The study lichens, both with rough (Ph. tenella) and smooth (P. sulcata) thalli, showed a similar capacity to retain nitrogen. Sulphur and carbon content in the lichens did not change along the transect of the highway, either
