Abstract
This study deals with the drinking water disinfection methods used in Kaunas since the 20th century. Even at the turn of the 16th century, wealthy citizens in Kaunas started speculating on building a centralized water supply unit. In the middle of the 16th century, three springs of clean water found in Kaunas laid the base for construction of a water supply unit with wooden pipes. When Kaunas had become a temporary capital of the independent Republic of Lithuania, along the water supply pipes an open discharge system sprang up for discharging dirty waters into the Nemunas and the Neris. The sewerage system was laid down in 1924, by the project of the David Grove firm and in early 1928 the authorities of the city launched the building of a water supply plant which was put into operation in 22 months. The opportunities for industrial development in Kaunas came up, construction of residential buildings became more active, and the city sanitation services improved. The water received from Eiguliai settlement was of high quality, no disinfection means were scheduled. However, when that single water supply was flooded in l946, the town authorities were under necessity to build primitive water treatment systems and disinfect water supplies using bleach as a chemical disinfectant. Later, since 1950 drinking water at the Eiguliai-Kleboniškis well field started to be disinfected using chlorine gases. When the third watering place in Vičiūnai was built in 1961, the water used to be disinfected with ultraviolet light. Since 2005 the water in Kaunas has been disinfected using sodium hypochlorite only. This oxidizer, in contrast to chlorine gas, is not placed into the category of hazardous substances and currently is being regarded as an advanced measure for water disinfection, i.e. hazardous to the health of people.
