Abstract: The article analyses the importance of language learning and development of plurilingual competence in higher education institutions. Increasing globalization of academic and professional life, internationalization "at home" and "abroad" place demands upon students and higher education graduates to be competent in more than two foreign languages in addition to their native one. Consequently, higher education institutions have to assume more responsibility for language study and intercultural competence development by involving these subjects in the academic programmes they offer to students in non-linguistic disciplines.[...]
