Abstract

Effects of cadmium and lead on the physiological and biochemical parameters of earthworm (Eisenia fetida) was conducted according to OECD 222 guidleines. The earthworms were grown for 56 days in ths soils amended with lead (40, 250, 500, 1000, 2500 mg Pb/kg) and cadmium (5, 10, 100, 250, 500 mg Cd/kg) concentrations. After 56 days exposure of metals earthworms were replaced to the clean (not metals polluted) soil and than they were following 56 days. Effects of growth and survival rates were measured every 14 days. Reproduction, bioaccumulation and antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) activity measured after 56 days of exposure and 56 days after recovery.
The results of the experiment showed that earthworms survival decreased, accordingly increasing exposure time and exposure to increasingly higher concentrations of metals. And finally, it was lower compared to the control group. It was observed that decrease of earthworms weight was noticeable during 500 mg Cd/kg cadmium and 40 mg Pb/kg lead concentrations. Both metals had negatyve effects of reproduction, cocoons and juveniles numbers were significantly lower compared to the control group (p<0,05). Recovery period, only previous cadmium concentration reduced the number of earthworms (first 14 days), the lead did not affect survival. After replaced to the clean soil earthworms weight began to grow faster as compared with the exposure period. Previous biggest cadmium (250 and 500 mg Cd/kg) and less lead (40 mg Pb/kg) concentrations were best of grown in recovery period, but earthworms weight was significantly lower compared with the control group (p<0,05). The reproduction of the recovery has been more intensive than after exposure metals, but cocoons and juveniles number level of control not reached. In assessing the impact of metals had showed that lead did not affect the enzyme activity, and cadmium caused by oxidative stress due to the increased enzymes activity. Under the effect of all the cadmium concentrations, except 10 and 100 mg Cd/kg concentrations, the activity of enzymes were increased and enzymes activity were significantly biggest compared with the control group (p<0,05). After recovery the activity of enzymes were decreased, but previous cadmium concentration had significant effect on the activity. Recovery was better after exposure small concentrations of cadmium than operate large concentrations of cadmium.
