Šaltinių rinkinyje publikuojamos dvidešimt trys Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės ir Maskvos valstybės 1449–1556 metų taikos ir paliaubų sutartys. Publikaciją sudaro perrašyti sutarčių originalai ir jų tekstų vertimai į lietuvių kalbą. Atrenkant dokumentus publikacijai, prioritetas buvo teikiamas dar neskelbtiems tarpvalstybinių sutarčių originalams – pergamentams. Tačiau dėl prastos kai kurių pirminių dokumentų fizinės būklės teko pasiremti jų nuorašais. Leidiniu siekiama sudaryti geresnes sąlygas šiuos istorinius šaltinius, turinčius ne tik mokslinę, bet ir politinę bei visuomeninę vertę, pažinti ne tik tyrėjams profesionalams, bet ir studentams, taip pat neakademinės bendruomenės nariams, besidomintiems Lietuvos užsienio politikos, santykių su Rusija (tuomete Maskvos valstybe) istorine raida.
The history of Lithuanian statehood and diplomacy lasts for more than 700 years. However, for a long time, we lacked continuous publication of sources presenting documents about the main international Lithuanian relations. This situation changed at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, when a new long-lasting continuing scientific project was initiated in the Lithuanian Institute of History, ensuring publication of treaties between Lithuania and foreign countries as well as documents supplementing these sources (negotiation reports, protocols to the treaties, and etc.) of various periods. This collection was entitled “Foreign policy documents of Lithuanian. Texts and Researches.” Chronologically, it was divided in two parts. The first one contains treaties of Lithuania of the 13th–18th centuries. The second is dedicated to publish documents of the newest times (since 1918). Sources from the 13th–18th century are published in original languages together presenting translations to the Lithuanian language. This manner of publishing ancient diplomatic sources with translations into Lithuanian language was chosen considering the needs of those studying history and political sciences, and aiming to ensure the possibility to get acquainted with its content for all interested in the history of policy and relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and foreign countries. The first publication of the series was the book 14 August, 1385 Act of Kreva (compiled by Jūratė Kaupienė, Vilnius: Žara, 2002). Another one followed – publication of the treaty texts on partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, also known as the Commonwealth of Both Nations, executed by Austria, Prussia and Russia, Documents on the partitions of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
