Abstract
Joseph Saunders (Sanders; 1773, London – 1854, Kremenets, Ukraine) has been one of the first university professors of the art history in Europe, as well as an outstanding master and successful teacher of engraving, which does not belong to the number of well-known figures. The article dedicated to him states two goals: to find out how understanding of Saunders’ creative activity, still not established, was formed in the art history literature, as well as to characterize him as art historian. Also his biographical data is presented briefly. The historiographical part describes those indirect ways by which the material about this historical engraver of St. Petersburg Hermitage (1796–1810), as well as the professor of engraving, art history and English literature at the University of Wilno (now Vilnius, 1810–1818) was accumulated. As a master with a great future he was presented already in 1807 (Reimers). As a professor he figured many times in Wilno periodicals in 1810-1840. In 1845, Saunders appeared on the pages of Nagler’s Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon, however under the names of two of his namesakes, who were known to the authors of the dictionary and to whom some of his works were ascribed.
