Abstract
One of the USA government’s aims in Eastern Europe, in 1919, was to prevent the spread of the communist ideology. This encouraged Lithuanians living in the USA to apply the government asking for the first necessity goods and food products for Lithuania. Due to the lack of information, the USA encountered difficulties while dealing with the problems of the Baltic region in Paris Peace Conference on the 18th January, 1919. Thus by giving support for the Middle-East European countries which were suffering from the ravages of the WWI, the USA government was seeking to examine their political and economical relations with Russia and Germany. The military and humanitarian missions organized by the USA government had close connections with the business world. Nevertheless, the support and help brought to Lithuania was useful and essential for the small and newly independent country. Activity reports of military and other missions in Lithuania gave information to the USA delegation in Paris and especially influenced the decision to establish the USA consulate in Kaunas on the 24th June, 1921. This step was of major importance for Lithuania, which was seeking recognition from the USA government in 1920–1921. The USA Red Cross and other missions’ support provided help for a number of Kaunas citizens, especially the poor ones. From May 1919 till April 1920, feeding centers were established in Kaunas. Food supplied by the USA missions helped to feed 6600 children (orphans or from the needy families). The support received from the USA influenced the formation of social and labour protection as a responsible organization in Lithuania. Institutions participating actively in the distribution of social support were social and labour protection departments, Kaunas police and city administration. The support and charity from the USA Red Cross which lasted for four years (1919–1922) diminished in 1922, as Lithuania reached economical and political stability.[...].
