The article discusses the processes of literary education in Lithuanian schools (changes in general curricula and education standards, in the models of Lithuanian language examinations at basic and secondary levels). The main problem of modern didactics is as follows: is it necessary to expand traditional literary didactics with ideas of modern and post-modern didactics thus developing flexible literary didactics models for general education schools in Lithuania? Mixing the ideas of Theme criticism, New criticism, Reader- response criticism, Psychoanalytic criticism, history, archaeology, flexible literary didactics and New Literacy Studies with stone related literary works of Lithuanian authors, the flexible literary didactics model is construed. Creative works related to the theme of stone, psychological and literary interests and the survey of participants from Vilnius A.Vienuolis high school, Juodupė’s gymnasium and students of Vilnius Pedagogical University are investigated. It is concluded that our hypothesis that attributes of stone culture survive in the mind is confirmed by the fact that respondents in general regard observances and literary works of stone admirers with favour. The survey shows positive attitudes to the application of the flexible literary didactics model in the field of Theme criticism in Lithuanian high schools. Taking into account post-modern educational trends (H a r gr eav e s , 1999), New Literacy Studies (P a h l , R o ws e l l , 2007) and implementation of flexible literary didactics models (J an u š a u sk i e n ė , 2004, 2005) in 2008 survey, it is clear that flexible literary didactics models could enrich literary education at mainstream schools in Lithuania by implementing psychology, ethnology, mythology, modern literary science and their integral combinations.
