Abstract

The aim of this research was to assess the relation between young adult‘s social comparison orientation and psychological well-being. The research involved 225 young adult respondents (67 men and 158 women) of which 138 were university students, 51 – high school students and 36 who were not studying at the moment. The chosen age group for the respondents was from 18 to 25 years old (the average age was 21,16). 119 of the respondents indicated having a romantic partner, 106 – did not.
The research data was collected with an online survey method. The survey was made using a shortened 18-item Scale of Psychological Well-being (Ryff & Keyes, 1995), Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Scale (INCOM) (Gibbons ir Buunk, 1999) and additional questions about respondet‘s sociodemographic characteristics.
The results of the study revealed a statistically significant negative although weak correlation between young adult's more pronounced tendency to compare abilities and environmental mastery, autonomy and positive relations with others. A weak negative correlation was also found between young adult's more pronounced tendency to compare opinions and environmental mastery along with autonomy. However, no correlation was found between young adult‘s social comparison tendancy and such psychological well-being elements as self-acceptance and personal growth. Socio-demographic data of the respondents revealed that women from men significantly differ only in their higher positive relationships with others. Also, young adults who are in a romantic relationship are more accepting of themselves and have more positive relationships with others. However, no statistically significant differences were found between groups of young adults who are high school/univeristy students and young adults who are not studying.
The conclusions of the study are that young adults' both pronounced tendency of ability and opinion-oriented social comparisons are weakly associated with lower psychological well-being on the following scales: environmental mastery and autonomy. Exclusively, only ability-oriented comparisons are weakly related to the positive relationships that young people have. The weak link found between social comparison and psychological well-being complements the theory that social comparison behavior may not have a strong bearing on the eudemonic well-being for young people. However, the discovery of although a weak negative link between social comparison and young adults' ability to master their own environment, personal traits of autonomy and positive relationships with others, reveals little-studied fields of research that could add to the understanding of the importance of social comparison behaviour in young adult's lives. It could also help to better our understanding of how young people’s social comparison behaviors may relate to other psychological characteristics of the person.
