Abstract: Lubrication is essential to reduce energy losses and increase durability of machines. The process of improving the properties of lubricants is on-going. For more than a decade in the field of lubricants, ionic liquids are characterized by their many positive properties characteristic for lubricants. In this work, the lubricating properties of phosphonium and ammonium ionic liquids were analysed and compared at different loading conditions. All the investigated ionic liquids were found to have excellent friction and wear reduction properties. The best lubricating ability possess ammonium based ionic liquids
