His Excellency Ban Ki-moon (born in 1944) has been working as the Secretary-General of the United Nations since 2007. During his term of office as the leader of the United Nations, he has been actively participating in the consolidation of the aims of the international community addressing global challenges like climate change, pandemics, assurance of food, energy and water resources and also for making the poor of the world to be heard better.
His Excellency Ban Ki-moon has initiated and has been continuing such important projects like Every Woman, Every Child, Education First, Sustainable Energy For All; he manages The Eight Millennium Development Goals programme, actively participates in formulating the new goals of sustainable development and development agenda after 2015. These initiatives receive strong support from international community.
His Excellency Ban Ki-moon also expresses his strong and active position on the conflicts and the resolution thereof; he mediates, submits proposals and attempts to convince political leaders of relevant parties regarding peaceful solution of conflicts. The current Secretary-General takes active interest in the problems of countries undergoing the transitional period, looks for opportunities to help them and invites countries with positive democratic experience, including Lithuania, to act deliberately in order to strengthen democracy.
For his merits, His Excellency Ban Ki-moon received various awards from the countries of various world regions (Algeria, Austria, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Philippines, India, Kazakhstan, Monaco, Mongolia, Peru, South Korea, Salvador, Tajikistan, etc.).
His Excellency Ban Ki-moon was awarded the Honorary Doctorate degree of VMU for constant aim to consolidate the efforts of the international community addressing global challenges, promotion of the ideal of the public diplomacy and constant efforts and initiatives for ensuring peace and safety in the world.
His Excellency Ban Ki-moon is the first Secretary-General of the United Nations who visited Lithuania during the entire time of Lithuania’s membership in the United Nations and met the highest-ranking officials of the country.
