How to know to which universities it is possible to go?

The list of possible universities can be found together with the announcement of the competition.

While choosing a university abroad, you have to pay attention to the following:

  • does the foreign university offer subjects (they are presented on its website) which you are meant to take at VMU as part of your study programme;
  • assure that smooth coordination of the Erasmus studies between the sending and the receiving institution, as well as validation after the Erasmus period, are regulated by the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS);
  • are you fluent in the foreign language which will be taught at the university abroad (subjects are not always taught in English. This may also be verified on the website of the foreign university);
  • if you would like to write your BA, MA or PhD thesis at a university abroad during the next semester, consult with your thesis supervisor and the head of the department at VMU regarding this possibility. The thesis is written abroad from 2 to 3 months. The selected students have to find a supervisor, a consulting lecturer, before their Erasmus period at a university abroad. The thesis is defended at VMU after the Erasmus studies are finished.

Selection criteria:

  • Learning outcomes of the last two semesters. The exception applies to the first-year students at all levels, when the first semester's learning outcomes are assessed, without having them – bachelor's degree or bachelor's / master's degree appendix (40% of the final score);
  • Compatibility of the study / research plan at the receiving institution and the study programme at VMU (40% of the final score);
  • Student motivation (20% of the final score);
  •  The level of knowledge of the language in which the study subjects will be held at the receiving institution, it should be not lower than it is specified in the Erasmus + Interinstitutional Agreement.

Note! The order of the selection criteria is not defined. The faculties/academies have the right to determine, make public and apply a separate sequence of criteria and additional criteria during the selection process.

The smooth coordination of the Erasmus+ studies between the sending and the receiving institution, as well as validation after the Erasmus period, are regulated by the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

Short-Term Studies

VMU students can participate in Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) to go on short-term study abroad mobility lasting from 5 to 30 days plus a mandatory virtual component.

Blended Intensive Programmes are short, intensive programmes that use innovative learning methods, including a mandatory virtual component. BIPs are organized by higher education institutions located in EU and EEA countries.

Upon successful completion of a BIP, students are awarded at least 3 ECTS credits.

Calls for applications to participate in BIPs, received from partner universities abroad, are shared with students by their academic units, which also organize the selection process (https://www.vdu.lt/en/international-cooperation/for-students/ – Academic Coordinators in Faculties – for VMU outgoing students). Students may only apply for the BIPs announced by their faculty.

The selection is based on applications submitted through the Mobility-Online system. Instructions for submitting an application can be found here. Applications are accepted each month and evaluated at the beginning of the following month. Applications must be submitted no later than 2 months before the beginning of the chosen BIP (whether the virtual or physical component starts first).

Eligibility criteria:

  • Good knowledge (at least B2 level) of the language of instruction of the BIP.
  • Relevance of the BIP/short-term course to the student’s study programme at VMU.
  • Additional eligibility criteria set by the host institution (e.g., level of study, subject area, etc.).

Selection criteria:

  1. Academic performance over the last two semesters. For first-year students, results of the first semester are considered; if not available, entrance scores or previous diploma results are taken into account:
      • grade 10 – 4 points
      • grade 9.0–9.9 – 3 points
      • grade 8.0–8.9 – 2 points
      • grade 7.0–7.9 – 1 point
      • below 6.9 – 0 points
  1. Student’s motivation (0–4 points), explaining why they want to join the chosen BIP and what academic and personal benefits it will bring.

Additional points:

  1. First-time participation in Erasmus+ short-term studies (+1 point).
  2. Students with fewer opportunities (+1 point).

Students are informed about the selection results individually through the Mobility-Online system.

Students are informed about the selection results individually.

Selected students must, as soon as possible but no later than 1 month before the start of mobility (whether the virtual or physical component starts first), submit in Mobility-Online the required information and documents, including:

  • Confirmation Letter regarding acceptance for short-term studies, issued by the foreign university organizing the BIP.
  • Application to the faculty dean (or chancellor, in the case of the Education Academy), signed also by the vice-dean/programme director and head of department. Doctoral students submit an application to the Rector.
  • Declaration of Honesty in case of green travel (if travelling by car with other participants, all must sign).
  • Request and supporting documents for recognition as a student with fewer opportunities (if applicable).
  • Completed Learning Agreement, signed by the student, the sending and the receiving institutions.

After submitting the above, the student signs the Grant Agreement. Once signed, 80% of the grant is paid in advance.

Erasmus+ financial support for short-term studies covers travel costs, subsistence during the physical mobility period, and additional travel days (1 day for the journey to and from the activity location). When choosing a green travel option (train, bus, or car-pooling with at least one other participant going to the same activity), up to 3 additional travel days each way (a total of up to 6) may be funded. If the travel distance one way is up to 500 km, participants must choose a green travel option (train, bus, or car-pooling with at least one other participant going to the same activity). If a non-green option is chosen, a justified explanation must be provided.

Erasmus+ grant rates for short-term studies:

DURATION GRANT (per day) Additional support per mobility (students with fewer opportunities)*
Up to 14 days € 79,00 € 100,00
15-30 days € 56,00 € 150,00

* Students belonging to groups with fewer opportunities may receive an additional €100 support on top of the individual support for a physical mobility activity lasting 5–14 days, and €150 for activities lasting 15–30 days. More information on the classification of groups with fewer opportunities can be found here.

Travel support depending on distance (Kaunas–host city):

Distance* Green travel Non-green travel

8,000 km or more € 1.735,00 € 1.735,00

* Travel distance refers to the distance between Kaunas and the city where the mobility activity takes place. The distance is calculated using the distance calculator provided on the European Commission’s website: https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/resources-and-tools/distance-calculator.

During the short-term study period abroad, it is necessary to present the Erasmus Period Statement form to the responsible person at the host university on the first and last days of your activities and ask them to confirm the physical mobility (activity) period. Travel days are not included in this period.

Within one week after completing the short-term studies (after the virtual or physical component ends, whichever is later), students must upload to Mobility-Online:

  • Erasmus Period Statement (covering both virtual and physical components);
  • Erasmus+ Participant Report;
  • For green travel: train/bus tickets or fuel receipts (if by car).

Additionally, students must submit the Transcript of Records issued by the host institution (this may take up to 5 weeks after mobility ends).

Once all required documents are submitted (except the Transcript of Records), the final 20% of the grant is paid, or funds may be reclaimed if the programme was not fully completed.
